In this lesson, students begin by examining striking statistics about global internet usage — ranging from online gambling losses to darknet transactions — to define the hidden and unregulated areas of the digital world. They then read profiles of five seemingly ordinary individuals and attempt to match them to their secret online personas, such as an anonymous troll or a secret online gambler. This leads into a focused grammar task where learners categorize advanced reporting verbs (e.g., to concede, to proclaim, to maintain) into functional groups before listening to the individuals' actual confessions to verify their guesses. The lesson transitions to a critical discussion on the moral implications of these hidden digital lives, debating issues like workplace dismissal for private online activities and the ethics of consuming extreme content. Finally, students expand their lexical range by matching key digital collocations (e.g., digital shadow, digital hygiene, digital exile) to their definitions, and conclude by evaluating controversial statements about privacy, surveillance, and the inescapable nature of the modern digital era.
