In this lesson, students begin by reviewing the definitions of the traditional Seven Deadly Sins (pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth) and answering relatable questions to identify these traits in their own daily lives. The lesson then transitions to the digital age, where students read an article mapping these sins to modern online behaviors, such as trolling (wrath), hoarding followers (greed), avoiding real-world interactions (sloth), curating perfect online personas (pride), cyber-stalking (lust), comparing profiles (envy), and compulsive scrolling or shopping (gluttony). Students expand their vocabulary by matching bolded terms from the text (e.g., boast, hate campaign, chronicle, troll) to their definitions. The lesson culminates in a personal reflection and discussion where learners evaluate their own digital habits, debate the ethical implications of online behavior, and analyze provocative quotes about the illusion of internet friendship and the performative nature of digital charity.
This lesson runs 60-90 min and can be split across two shorter sessions if needed. The audio component works well for pre-class listening practice.
