B1-B2 · General English
In this lesson, students begin by discussing their ideal weekend routines and watching a short film titled "Sauna," where they analyze the protagonist's emotional journey and the symbolic meaning of "melting" in the heat. They then expand their lexical range by matching key nouns, verbs, and adjectives (e.g., cold plunge, to lash, sacred) to their definitions and using them to describe visual prompts. The lesson transitions into a cross-cultural exploration of bathing rituals, where learners read about the distinct practices of the Finnish Sauna, Russian Banya, Turkish Hammam, and Japanese Sento/Onsen, discussing the social and historical significance of each. Finally, students test their knowledge with a true/false quiz about the health benefits and physiological effects of sauna use, verify their answers via a video, and reflect on a literary quote about the transformative power of heat on the mind and body.
This lesson runs 60-90 min and can be split across two shorter sessions if needed. The video component works well as homework before the live session.
