In this lesson, students begin by matching famous quotes from figures like Steve Jobs, Banksy, and Albert Einstein to their underlying meanings, verifying their interpretations via a podcast. The lesson then shifts to vocabulary building, where learners differentiate between nuanced terms for intelligence — such as clever, intelligent, smart, and wise — by completing contextual gap-fill exercises. Next, students engage in a critical thinking activity by reading ten surprising statements about the correlation between intelligence and various traits (e.g., being a night owl, left-handedness, or having a dark sense of humor). They predict whether these statements are myths or truths before watching a video to check their answers. Finally, the class explores the concept of a "smart move" by analyzing real-life scenarios — ranging from financial decisions and phishing emails to handling workplace conflicts and managing homework deadlines — and debate which actions demonstrate good judgment.
This lesson is designed to fit within a single 90 min session. Both audio and video components are included, which also works well for homework-based or asynchronous practice.
