B1-B2 · General English
In this lesson, students begin with a "phobias workshop" warm-up, answering questions about everyday sounds and social situations (e.g., awkward, borderline, silence) to set the context of fear and discomfort. They then explore specific phobias by matching terms to their definitions. The core of the lesson features personal accounts from individuals (such as Chloe, Elena, Mark, Mike, Sarah, and David) sharing their experiences with different fears. Students analyze these accounts through two dedicated audio listening tasks to understand the real-life impact of these phobias. Additionally, the lesson incorporates two video comprehension tasks to further explore the nature, causes, and remedies of specific fears. Students complete matching exercises related to these causes and treatments, verifying their answers through a final podcast listening activity. Finally, learners examine a statistical chart displaying the most common phobias (e.g., public speaking, animals, heights, blood) and their prevalence percentages. The class concludes with a critical discussion on the relatability of these fears, the role of childhood experiences in shaping adult phobias, the distinction between a "normal" fear and a clinical phobia, and the effectiveness of exposure therapy as a treatment.
