In this lesson, students begin by answering a humorous yet thought-provoking quiz that challenges common assumptions about technology, ownership, and human identity (e.g., who really owns the Earth, what a smartphone actually is). They then read an excerpt from Nick Bostrom's Deep Utopia, which introduces four distinct societal models for a post-scarcity future: the Hedonic Island (pleasure), the Mastery Island (challenge), the Primitive Island (simplicity), and the Transhumanist Island (evolution). Students discuss which lifestyle they would choose and why, reflecting on personal values regarding work, comfort, and meaning. The lesson continues with Max Tegmark's ten possible endings for humanity in Life 3.0, where learners match dystopian and utopian scenarios — such as "Enslaved God," "Zookeeper," and "Egalitarian Utopia" — to their definitions before verifying answers via podcast. Finally, students consolidate new vocabulary (e.g., surveillance, abundance, status quo) and engage in a forward-looking debate on whether current tech trends align with any of these predicted futures or if alternative paths remain possible. Students can also do an extra creative task (e.g., designing their own fifth island for Deep Utopia based on a value not covered in the text).
