About This Lesson

In this lesson, students begin by categorizing positive and negative storytelling elements (e.g., compelling characters, narrative drift, cheap melodrama) and discussing what makes classic literature and films enduring. They then dive into a true crime story set in Depression-era New York about Michael Malloy, a homeless alcoholic targeted by a gang of criminals for a life insurance scam. Through sequential reading and listening tasks, learners track the conspirators' increasingly absurd and lethal attempts to kill Malloy — ranging from poisoned alcohol and spoiled food to freezing exposure and carbon monoxide — while he miraculously survives each ordeal. Students expand their vocabulary by matching terms like speakeasy, intoxicated, beneficiaries, and cautionary tale to their definitions. Finally, they consolidate their understanding by retelling the story's climax, where the criminals are ultimately caught and executed, and reflect on how the real-life events align with the narrative techniques discussed at the start of the lesson.

This lesson runs 90-120 min and can be split across two shorter sessions if needed. The audio component works well for pre-class listening practice.
