About This Lesson

In this lesson, students begin by examining a word cloud of popular internet labels (e.g., corporate girlie, tradwife, pick me girl) and discussing where they have encountered them and whether they are used positively, negatively, or jokingly. They then expand their vocabulary by matching these terms to their specific definitions, exploring the distinct aesthetics and behaviors associated with each archetype. The core of the lesson features a listening activity where students hear four women โ€” Milena, Zoya, Elara, and Amaris โ€” describe their lives, hobbies, and the labels they receive, requiring learners to identify specific details about each speaker's profession and feelings toward their label. Finally, students critically analyze these stereotypes by placing them on a spectrum from empowering to limiting, before engaging in a discussion about which labels are most misunderstood, which create the strongest reactions, and which ones they would personally remove from society. Students can also do an extra speaking task where they discuss what male labels are.
