About This Lesson

In this lesson, students begin by identifying countries in photographs and testing their knowledge with trivia questions ranging from mosquito-free nations to medieval beverage alternatives. They verify these answers by listening to an American couple discuss long-haul flight habits while traveling to Europe. The lesson then transitions to reading comprehension, where learners match descriptive statements about social systems, economies, and lifestyles to specific countries like Finland, Norway, and Denmark. Students critically examine survey results regarding what citizens value most about their home nations — such as politics, history, or people — and discuss why certain demographics express negative feelings toward their own country. Finally, they listen to three speakers (Enzo, Zeynep, Jean-Luc) share personal perspectives on national identity before reflecting on sources of pride and shame in their own cultures.
