What's the "ChatGPT Issues" ESL Lesson About?

B2-C1 · General English

Main Objectives

About This Lesson

The lesson opens with a New Yorker cartoon comparing a robot’s massive pile of generated papers to a human’s single crumpled page. This sparks a conversation about what makes human creative effort valuable and what might be lost if we remove the "struggle" from the process. Students then match 13 real-world AI issues (such as systemic bias, job displacement, deepfakes, and energy consumption) to specific, concrete scenarios. This leads into a short film, where students watch and check off which of those 13 issues are actually portrayed on screen, followed by a discussion on their personal reactions to the film. The focus shifts to a video report about Gill Small, a 75-year-old retiree who uses a companion robot (ElliQ) to combat isolation. Students answer multiple-choice questions about her daily routine, the robot's features, and statistics on senior loneliness. They also complete a fill-in-the-blank task based on a testimonial from another user, David Rutter. Afterward, the class reads and reacts to real YouTube comments on the story, discussing whether robot companions are a sad replacement for human contact or a genuinely helpful tool for aging populations. The lesson wraps up with a more positive, practical perspective. Students read or listen to an audio article where a speaker shares six simple, everyday ways to use AI as a helpful tool rather than a threat. The examples include drafting polite emails, getting quick explanations for complex words, brainstorming recipes, planning trips, generating fun images, and summarizing long documents. The class finishes by reflecting on which of these six tasks would save them the most time in their own lives.

This lesson runs 60-90 min and can be split across two shorter sessions if needed. Both audio and video components are included, which also works well for homework-based or asynchronous practice.
