What's the "Change Your Mind" ESL Lesson About?

B1-B2 · General English

Main Objectives

About This Lesson

In this lesson, students begin by defining "to change your mind" through visual prompts of major life decisions — such as getting a tattoo, changing travel plans, or ending a friendship — and discussing their own experiences with indecisiveness. The lesson then shifts to grammar, introducing the Present Perfect tense and key time markers like already, yet, and recently. Students listen to four individuals (Clara, Kevin, Anna, and Mike) share personal life experiences, matching spoken sentences to grammatical usages. The core tackles a thought-provoking short film titled "The Mother Situation," centered on a family's intense conflict over a mother's decision to pursue euthanasia. After learning key vocabulary (e.g., euthanasia, resentment, pure intentions), students complete a detailed listening task identifying which family member said or did specific things, sparking deep ethical discussion. Finally, students watch a video explaining why it is okay to change your mind, answering comprehension questions about the guilt of saying "yes" to things and the resentment that builds when we force ourselves to follow through.

This lesson is designed to fit within a single 90 min session. Both audio and video components are included, which also works well for homework-based or asynchronous practice.
