What's the "Belief" ESL Lesson About?

B2-C1 · General English

Main Objectives

About This Lesson

In this lesson, students begin by analyzing a comprehensive chart showing belief percentages across 18 concepts (from Fate and God to Simulation Theory and AI takeover), comparing male and female responses and discussing why certain beliefs are more prevalent than others. The lesson transitions to a close reading of an excerpt from Terry Pratchett's Hogfather, featuring a dialogue between Death and Susan about the necessity of believing in "little lies" to believe in "big ones" like justice and mercy. Students match vocabulary to definitions before engaging in philosophical discussion. Next, students watch a video interview with Neil deGrasse Tyson discussing his views on God, completing a vocabulary gap-fill using synonym pairs and discussing the nature of faith and proof. Finally, the lesson shifts to conspiracy theories, where students examine three core motivational categories: epistemic motives (desire for understanding), existential motives (need for control), and social motives (need for interaction), before analyzing specific theories ranging from Moon Landing denial to the Dead Internet Theory.

This lesson is designed to fit within a single 90 min session. The video component works well as homework before the live session.
