They discuss which statistics are most surprising and share their own experiences with debt. The lesson then transitions to vocabulary building, where learners match specific debt categories (e.g., payday loans, overdraft fees, medical debt, utility debt) to their real-world contexts. Next, students watch a short video highlighting that 77% of Americans carry some form of debt, identifying the most common types people struggle with. The core of the lesson involves a critical evaluation of nine provocative statements about debt. Students debate whether debt is a "financial ladder" or a "trap," if credit scores merely make people "servants to interest," and whether "smart debt" is simply leverage used by the wealthy to grow their assets. Finally, learners listen to three speakers (Marcus, Naomi, and Rosalind) share their perspectives on debt, matching each person's viewpoint to the corresponding statements and analyzing how they justify their financial realities and choices.
