In this lesson, students begin by watching a comedy clip featuring Larry David to introduce the concept of affectation, specifically focusing on vocal fry and the annoyance it can cause. They then watch an educational video to understand the scientific definition of vocal fry (creaky voice), its association with youth and gender, and how it is perceived in professional settings. Students expand their vocabulary by matching specific types of affectation — such as name-dropping, intellectual posturing, and mirroring — to their definitions, before listening to four speakers describe their own experiences with these behaviors. The lesson culminates in a discussion where students reflect on which affectations they find most irritating, whether they are guilty of any themselves, and what matters more in communication: the content of words or the manner of delivery.
This lesson is designed to fit within a single 90 min session. Both audio and video components are included, which also works well for homework-based or asynchronous practice.
