In this lesson, students begin by analyzing statistical clues to guess a mystery product (Angry Birds) and ordering gameplay instructions, followed by a discussion on the game's massive initial success and subsequent decline in popularity. They then expand their vocabulary by matching underlined personality traits (e.g., relentless, pacifist, paranoid) to their definitions and discussing which character best represents their own personality. The lesson transitions to the concept of a "one-hit wonder," defining the term and examining examples from toys, food, literature, and music (e.g., Slinky, Nutella, Gotye, Rick Astley). Finally, students listen to a conversation between two speakers discussing one-hit wonders, followed by a fun facts quiz where they match trivia clues to famous examples and categorize them into sectors like Cinema, Technology, and Food and Drink.
This lesson runs 60-90 min and can be split across two shorter sessions if needed. Both audio and video components are included, which also works well for homework-based or asynchronous practice.
